The life line (Jeevana Rekha) curves around the Mount of Venus — the fleshy base of the thumb — from between the thumb and index finger down toward the wrist. The single most important thing to know about it: it never predicts lifespan, illness or death. Published research testing the old "long line, long life" folk belief has found no correlation. Classical readers use it instead to describe vitality, life-force, rootedness in home and family, and the major turning points of a life's journey.
Starting high on the Mount of Jupiter reads as ambition and drive from youth. A wide sweep encircling a full Venus mount reads as abundant vitality, warmth and generosity. A line that hugs the thumb closely reads as more contained energy and a more reserved temperament.
Deep, clear and well-coloured reads as a steady, resilient life-force; thin or faint reads as a finer, more sensitive energy that benefits from rest. Importantly, a short life line means nothing about length of life — classical readers explicitly separate vitality (read from depth and the supporting Mars sister line) from the line's length.
An island marks a spell of lowered vitality or unsettlement, read symbolically. A break marks a major life change — and breaks are traditionally "repaired" by overlapping ends, a protective square drawn around the break, or a Line of Mars (a faint guardian line running just inside the life line). Branches rising toward the fingers read as advancing fortune; a frayed, tasselled end reads as energy dispersing gently late in life.
